GOD’S STORY part 69: His mercy & compassion delay human progress

Tower of Babel, multiple languages and the scattering of mankind

GOD is full of love, compassion, patience, mercy. It is out of mercy that He disperses mankind so that their bad choices don’t cause even more destruction. His mercy & compassion delay human progress deliberately. Let’s unpack why…

Preparing the Bride for GOD’s Story.

How do we prepare as the Bride of Christ? One aspect is to learn GOD’S STORY. He created us in His image…. Piece by piece, and peace by peace, we learn to walk as He has walked. And we learn His perspective.

From Genesis 11:8-9,

“So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.”

Why would GOD thwart the will of the people whom He created? Why would He give them authority over all the earth only for it to be given away to Satan?

I can’t help thinking that there are two strands going on throughout history:

Battles against GOD

One strand is a story about mankind learning the power of GOD, abusing it and then some — learning to submit to it, they are trusted to hold it.

The other strand is a story about the Creator of the universe and a jealous and spiteful creation, Lucifer, who needs to learn he is not powerful, that rather, all that he was given was gifted to him, not deserved or earned, but by the grace of GOD.

Ultimately, both stories are about man’s relationship to GOD and His relationship with us, because satan is a type of personality who is like fallen man, choosing  not to surrender to GOD.

GOD’s Salvation Story

In Genesis 11, from verse 8 we see GOD disperse man and confuses the languages as a means to protect themselves from themselves.

So how does that line up today?

First, we all have a means of salvation and have had it for 2000 years. Before that, the Jews had it and to the measure others caught on, they had an opportunity to become a part of “Israel” too.

Why did GOD prevent mankind from creating the tower to reach heaven? In “nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them”, what was GOD preventing?

Science and Technology advance

We only need to see how science & technology has advanced since maths and chemistry became “universal languages” along with English. Let’s see what mankind has “contributed” to the world since discovery and invention have exploded throughout the Industrial and Technological Revolutions.

We’ve had two world wars in the 20th century and since then: abortion on demand, euthanasia, social and political unrest to disturb our world, and the threat of nuclear war. Most recently, Artificial Intelligence threatens humanity. All of this is thanks to technology. Do you think the LORD anticipated this as He observed the Tower’s design and construction? I do.

We’ve had incredible medical advances. But that also has reduced the miracles in the same societies which have found their own cures. As we have become more self sufficient and self reliant, GOD’s presence and power have been pushed out.

Out of compassion and a consequent delay of the inevitable, GOD dispersed mankind thousands of years ago. He confused language to delay invention which would be — which has been proven to be — self destructive.

I think this tactic was an act if wisdom and profound love. What do you think?

GOD’s Mercy Seat: His protection against Himself

The LORD GOD loves us. He is  all powerful, omniscient, omnipresent, an all consuming fire…. And all loving.

GOD’s Power

When we recognise the powerful presence of GOD, then we might begin to fathom the depth of His love for us. He could fry us all in an instant, and yet, He does not.

How can we see the depth of His love in original scripture right back to the beginning of time? Well, let’s at least look at Exodus and Psalms to gain some insight…

GOD’s Mercy Seat in Exodus 25 reveals His protection even against Himself. He has to judge mankind because of their association with sin and Satan. Yes, His Psalm 91 is just one Psalm which declares — and reveals in action — His love. And  all this is even before He sent His son to die on our behalf!

These two amazing passages of scripture reveal GOD’s love for us, His commitment to us and His power over us.

GOD’s mercy seat

Exodus 25 reveals GOD’s love for us in that He protects us…. from Himself.

First, a read of the whole chapter will offer context. Then, look at verse 2, “Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering.”

What does GOD offer?

“You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold… (Exodus 25:17a) and “two cherubim of gold” (verse 18a) “And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim will be toward the mercy seat.” (Verse 20) “And there I will meet with you and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim…” (verse 22)

What is happening? GOD is offering His mercy: a way of communication, a way of protection against His judgement, a way to be a part of Him rather than against Him. Against Him draws us to judgment, fire, death; but with Him draws us to Him and Him to us, in relationship, safe within His mercy.

He even includes His angels’ protection for us, as symbolised by the cherubim on His mercy seat.

GOD’s Psalm of protection

Psalm 91 begins, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” GOD is our “refuge”, our “fortress”. Wow! What are we up against? Yes, Satan. But also the wrath of GOD if we are not with Him. He offers us protection even against Himself.

Again in verse 11, He offers us angelic protection rather than their power against us:

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.”

But why does GOD give us His protection?

GOD offers protection “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver Him…” (Psalm 91:14)

GOD is not random

In His Word, sampled in Exodus 25 and Psalm 91, we see that when we love Him, when we honour Him, He protects us.

It is not because He is an egotist, but because He loves us and wants to protect us. He offers protection from Satan and also from our own sin.

BUT we can truly receive only when we love and honour… otherwise we are in the hands of the enemy and vulnerable to both the evil of Satan and the wrath of GOD.

When our heart is pure, our safety is sure. We hold our protection in our own will.

GOD loves us and wants us to choose Him. He has chosen us. What will be do with that, every step of our day? Salvation from the beginning of the Word of GOD has been available. It is all about offering our love to Him. He’s waiting with open an heart.

Something to ponder.
