This was written even before Alexei Navalny’s death.

The interview between Tucker Carlson and President Putin of Russia is over 2 hours’ long but it’s the last 20 minutes that is riveting. Previous to this it is a lot of meandering and posturing from Putin and Carlson just lets him talk.

But TC becomes invested in the last 20 minutes, asking about the release of the young American journalist Evan Gershkovich in prison in Russia for espionage. He also asks Putin, ‘What do you really think about the fate of the world in combat?’

Putin doesn’t change a beat throughout the interview, doing a decent job at feigning sincerity but too static to actually be believable. Carlson, however does change his mood. As I see it, it’s because he cares.

He took a huge gamble interviewing the Russian president. And although he was fodder for criticism before and after, to my mind, he made a valliant effort to allow the West to see who Putin is. The sheer fact that Putin didn’t allow us to see into his humanity demonstrates to me, that he is a monster: a hit man, a mafia leader, a cold-hearted and calculating monster. No one needs to fear the interview. — anyone with heart can see how cold the Russian president is. Congratulations Tucker Carlson. By being neutral and by caring passionately for the fate of a 32 year old journalist, you exposed the heartless man in Putin.
