Prayer and Intercession
If we think of prayer as asking GOD for… and intercession as telling GOD what…
together they form a combination to build our dialogue with the Creator of the Universe.
Prayer and intercession: a way of describing how we build our relationship with GOD.
But I recently watched a video on YouTube: Lamb Amongst Wolves. Essentially about Iranians coming to Christ in an underground church, it is based on the truth of who Jesus is as the Son of the One True GOD, on discipleship (at the point of introduction, not at the point of salvation), and on a Gospel which includes obedience.
At the heart of the Gospel: is intimacy with GOD through Holy Spirit, relationship with one another, and obedience to the lifestyle the Lord Jesus taught us to live.
He did not come to replace the law but to fulfil it. (Matthew 5:17)
He did nothing other than what the Father asked Him to do. (John 5:30)
He taught us to love GOD and love one another. (John 13:34-35)
Are we doing that?
Let’s begin and proceed with prayer and intercession
As we are going to be disciples of Jesus, and create disciples of Jesus as well, we need to develop our intimacy with Christ, so much so that we are asking, hearing, and obeying the Holy Spirit for whom Jesus left — so that Holy Spirit could be sent. (John 14:16)
So, to do this we need three ingredients:
Intimacy, Intercession, Imposition.
Intimacy
How do we become intimate with anyone? We spend time in open-hearted conversation. So, this is what we must do to become intimate with Holy Spirit: give Him time, attention, and share our hearts with Him.
Intercession
What is the vehicle through which we can effect individuals, society, and the world around us? Prayer — not the prayer of asking for ourselves, but of intervening in the world circumstances on behalf of others, just as Jesus intercedes on behalf of others to GOD the Father. (Hebrews 7:25)
It is travail. It can be painful. It takes time, energy, and commitment. But it is effective! It breaks through barriers. It changes outcomes. It changes lives.
Imposition
We call down heaven, to come to earth. We ask for GOD’s will to be done. We make declarations on behalf of the LORD as the Spirit leads us. We impose GOD’s authority and GOD’s will in circumstances.
We must do this to overcome the world and the devil.
