Lot is saved, but not all his household.
Lot is warned by this guests to flee from Sodom. He tells his sons-in-law but they think he’s joking. So, only his wife and two unmarried daughters escape with him. And although Lot is spared, he’s a bit choosey about where he goes…
Preparing the Bride for GOD’s Story
How do we prepare as the Bride of Christ? One aspect is to learn GOD’S STORY. He created us in His image…. Piece by piece, and peace by peace, we learn to walk as He has walked. And we learn His perspective.
Genesis 19:12-21
“Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place! For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
“When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
“Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords! Indeed now, your servant has found favour in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”
“And he said to him, “See, I have favoured you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.”
Flee to the mountains
After the men staying with Lot pulled him out of harm’s way and cast blindness on all of his enemies, they warn him to get out of Sodom. They tell him to go to the mountains.
Lot lovingly and dutifully warns his family, many of whom do not listen.
Lot is told to wait no longer, to go immediately and don’t look back! Oddly, in spite of the heightened dangers and urgency, he pauses to ask the men if he can go to the city instead of the mountains.
We need to learn our lessons well!
You’ll remember when Abraham and Lot were splitting up, Abraham gave Lot first choice as to the direction to go. Lot liked the look of the city — and chose Sodom. Now, he’s choosing a city over the countryside again.
Sometimes we can are mightily rescued and blessed, and yet, we don’t fully grasp the danger or the blessing. We might think we can pick and choose our outcome. Indeed, in this case, Lot asks if he can go to another city rather than to the mountains.
It seems he prefers city life rather than rural. But he hasn’t learned to dangers of the City!
He is granted his request. But it will prove costly. Next week we’ll see a consequence of simply not doing precisely what the rescuers encouraged him to do…
