Jacob has a lot to learn. As his life unfolds in scripture, we see his journey is far from easy. Nevertheless, he is blessed many times over and for that, ultimately, he gives a nod to tithing.
Preparing the Bride for GOD’s Story
How do we prepare as the Bride of Christ? One aspect is to learn GOD’S STORY. He created us in His image…. Piece by piece, and peace by peace, we learn to walk as He has walked. And we learn His perspective.
Genesis 28:18-22
“Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
Ah Jacob!
Jacob has been given the inheritance of a first born son. He has been given his brother’s birthright. But he has not yet given his heart to the LORD GOD.
At last we see here, Jacob giving a conditional offering… “If GOD will… then I will…”
What a dealmaker. No wonder he will later meet his match in his Uncle Laban. We reap what we sow!
Nevertheless, spare grace to Jacob. He anoints the stone. He re-names the place to celebrate GOD. And he makes a vow unto GOD, to tithe as a way to honour Him.
How do we show honour to our Creator?
