Our children are our precious charges
In spite of the day-to-day ups and downs, I am reminded that our children are our precious charges.
But we live in a culture in the West, where children are either doted upon or completely ignored, spoilt and pampered or denied love, care and attention. The two poles of parenting are too broad and not what is best for society nor for the children.
So where is the middle ground?
How do we instil in them how valuable they are … without spoiling them?
I offer the question rather than a pat answer, because this is something we need to be aware of, rather than be oblivious to it. This is a question I hold in my mind, and use it to keep me alert and on my toes, so that I love without indulging and care without turning another person into a “spoilt brat”.
How do I balance my parenting?
The key, I think, is to hold the two poles in my mind, to ensure a reality in the middle that is affordable in time and money for me, and beneficial in building confidence and independence for my offspring.
And I pray. I do pray to do well as a parent and I do pray for my child, that he grows up healthy in every sphere: emotionally, physically, intellectually, socially, financially, morally — and spiritually. All these components make up a human being. So, I pray for guidance, wisdom, and lots of love.
I remember golden moments in my child’s early years. That helps me to calibrate today.
And I am thankful every day that my child exists in my life. I take nothing for granted, but I am thankful for who I have borne.
I hope the best for you too:)
Sarah
