For Mothers: Hugs

“Never underestimate the power of a hug!”

Let’s never underestimate the power of hugs.

I was raised by a busy mother and a father of integrity but acute detachment.

I thrived on energy (aka was difficult to control), had little discipline (though I excelled academically ultimately) and was gregarious albeit self centred.

What I needed more than anything was a hug – or 10,000.

As I reflect on my own history, I think I must say, “Never underestimate the power of a hug!” As parents, as mothers, sometimes the best thing is a hug.

We need it sometimes. How much more do our children need it a lot of the time.

Children ask — or even if they don’t ask for one, they will thrive if they have hugs. Teens may resist, but they need it.

Words are powerful. “I love you” needs to trip off our tongues even when we’re cross and especially when we’re not. But a hug, an embrace of love, kindness, patience, hope and encouragement cannot be underestimated for its power to heal, comfort and build the person receiving, as well as grow the relationship between the two people embracing.

So, let’s hug our children! Often. Deeply. Unconditionally.

Blessings, Sarah
